Steven Gerrard living the Anfield dream

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard

The Anfield captain has previously snubbed a move to Chelsea and was targeted by Real Madrid after the World Cup, but the 30-year-old stayed on Merseyside despite Liverpool’s fall from grace.

Stars such as Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina have been tipped for transfers if the slump continues, but Hodgson is confident he will have no problems holding on to the likes of local boys Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

‘Carragher is an excellent player and people like him and Steven Gerrard epitomise Liverpool Football Club,’ said Hodgson.

‘These days there is so much talk about do players want to stay or want to go, and with those two there’s never any question. They are Liverpool through and through.

‘It’s very important we have people like that at this club and Carragher epitomises it with his fighting spirit.

‘He has played left-back, right back and centre half for me this season and he doesn’t moan about it.

‘He gets on with job and I have no fears ever about playing him at full back or centre back because he plays equally as well in both positions.’

The boss also defended Joe Cole after a laclustre start to the former Chelsea midfielder’s Anfield career.

The England international snubbed offers from the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United to join Liverpool as a free agent after the World Cup, but he has struggled to impress.

Levi Ben-Shmuel: The Tao of the Fall Classic: What Baseball Can Teach Us About Living

The modern World Series started last week for the 75th time since 1903. While watching the American and National League playoffs, I was struck by how many Tai Chi principles were used by the elite athletes on the field. Tai Chi, the Chinese martial art renowned for its health and relaxation benefits, is based on the Tao, the philosophy encapsulated by the well-known Yin/Yang symbol.

Tai Chi works with the never-ending dance of opposite yet complimentary energies that make up the world as we know it. The brilliance of Tai Chi is its understanding of using these energies to create results in an incredibly efficient, harmonious way.

If you know what to look for, you will see major league baseball players using some of the same principles to create major-league results. Understanding these principles can help anyone, and I mean anyone (great physical abilities are not required), achieve powerful outcomes while exerting as little energy as possible.

Both the pitcher and batter start in the state that precedes Tai Chi called wu chi. This is the space before movement and action begin. It is still, quiet, and pregnant with unlimited possibilities. Notice how the players attempt to get into wu chi before a pitch is thrown. The stillness creates the opportunity to be in the flow with what happens in the next instant when movement begins.

Related to the wu chi state is the concept called sung. It is a hard term to translate. I think of it as relaxed concentration. It is the state of being totally present, yet being relaxed and concentrated at the same time. Notice how loose the best players are before the action begins. If a player is not in sung, his tightness can be exploited by the one who remains in it.

When you are faced with a big moment, how relaxed are you? What are you focused on? Are you trying to anticipate what happens next, or are you ready to flow with the reality of the next moment?

In essence once a pitch is thrown, the pitcher and batter are trying to catch the other off balance. It is a fascinating study in focus and being ready to take advantage of tension in the opponent. Let's see how it plays out in Tai Chi terms.

If the pitcher moves out of sung and executes his intention perfectly, the intensity of that intention can overwhelm the batter. New York Yankee closer Mariano Rivera is a great example of this. When he is on, the power one feel before he even throws the ball puts the batter at a disadvantage. There is a feeling of inevitability that he will succeed. You can imagine the tension created in the mind and body of the batter when faced with this commanding and clear energy.

How successful are you in executing your intentions? Does your focus generate power that will lead you to your goal?

The batter uses the concept of emptiness and fullness to hit the ball successfully. This refers to a clear use of Yin and Yang energies. Being full means engaging 100 percent of one of these energies. Being empty means engaging none. Typically, just before a batter swings the bat, he empties the front leg and completely fills his back leg. You can see how rooted the player is on the back leg, before his swing. A tremendous energy potential is created in releasing the energy stored in the back leg through the body onto the front leg and arms.

The batter releases the energy through rotating the waist. The Tai Chi Chuan Classics, attributed to Chang San-feng, say, "The chin (intrinsic strength) should be ?rooted in the feet, ?generated from the legs, ?controlled by the waist, and ?manifested through the fingers." To integrate the body as one harmonious unit, Tai Chi says the waist must generate movement. Notice how a player like San Francisco Giant Juan Uribe uses tremendous waist rotation to generate enough power to knock a ball out of the park.

As you step up to the plate in your life, what are you rooted in? Where is your energy located? Are you ready to transfer it for maximum effect? Are you moving as an integrated unit, or are different parts fighting each other?

Whether or not you love watching baseball, you are a player in the game of your own life. You can approach your own challenges with great focus while staying relaxed. You can utilize your energy is an efficient way to achieve great things by being present to the current reality.

May you reach championship heights!

Jared Braiterman: "you really like living here? Point of view of an outsider on Tokyo

(Article published in Newsweek Japan 28 October 2010 in Japanese)

"You really do enjoy living in Tokyo?" is a question that I often wonder ici.Malgré living in Tokyo for two years now, I cannot distinguish whether this issue expressed national modesty, a feeling of inferiority or ignorance of the experience of daily life in the United States.

Both film and television of the United States images circulate around the world, including the Japan.Perhaps these images give Japan a familiarity with a place that many do not have visité.En revenge, most citizens of United States rarely idealized view representations of foreign countries in the mass media, except perhaps for the images of war. United States, a sense of superiority requires only the more superficial knowledge of other places.

I often hear a common lament of top executives page Japan, University professors and officials. With the rise of China and the India, the Government of the United States and its mobile and educated individuals are more interested in the so-called Japon.La "China change" sparks Japanese anguish that includes and beyond economic and diplomatic concerns.

This is flattering and perplexed that the Japanese consider the presence of North American and European to be a barometer of the economy and its place in a world changing. are we really so important to Japan identity national or is this another example of Japanese politeness that the United States people have so much difficulty recognizing?

The United States Government and the people are rarely with the reputation of their country abroad. Immigration concerns revolve around concerns illegal and non-skilled newcomers. There is little public debate on whether the world best and the brightest desire to acquire education and launch their careers in the United States.

Since the Lehman shock, the contracting economy has affected all Nations. Yet, Japan seems to be specific, long malaise that is simultaneously economic, political and cultural. The so-called "lost decade" is in its third decade, in the midst of political instability. More recently, the discovery of the 230,000 age-old missing raised cultural rather new levels of consternation and indignation.Les statistics that until recently reported high quality of life of the Japan seem now to the ineffectiveness of the Government and treason filial product longevity.

With the common question of whether I like "really" living here, Japanese also want to know if I am here because of work YH ' I learned over time that it is easier to answer "Yes", despite the answer is false. These two issues make me wonder why the Japanese value not the unique qualities of urban life and culture. Why is - it difficult for Japanese to imagine Tokyo is attractive for foreigners?Japanese believe that money is what they have to offer to the world or themselves?

During the bubble in the 1980s, the largest number of Americans and Europeans have come to the Japan. If they have become bankers, architects or publishers of the book, long term most expatriate I met initially in the Japan came from cultural interests, whether literature, Buddhism or gardens. Now I meet other newcomers abroad with many different interests, including not only but also animates mahjong, the Japanese language, even of boy bands and graphical design.

The Japan place in the world is certainly changing.Decline in the population and persistent deflation create an uncertain future that would have been unthinkable in the era of super-growth now long past. The world cannot be rushing to copy Japon.Encore Japan business management techniques still has much to offer to the world in terms of ideas and culture.

Japan post-Bubble has demonstrated remarkable resilience and creativity in the challenges faced by both developed and developing countries. How to live with limited natural resources? how to create dense cities which are safe and enjoyable? adopt the new without erasing the past?

In my work, I meet lots of visionary Japanese strive to resolve organizers art mondiales.Les and difficult national issues and agricultural innovators are wonderful experiences aimed at revitalizing depopulated technology developers Japon.Les campaign create new platforms for the community, the trade and médias.Entreprises and youth bring nature into the city's social and environmental health.

The economy could no longer be the envy of the world, or the place where foreigners dream for enrichment rapide.Pourtant its culture and people continue to attract foreigners wishing to explore new ways to work, live and as many of us in the 21st siècle.Bon foreign as living ici.Je wonder if the Japanese asking such questions politely strange do not see the positive qualities of Tokyo.
