North Korea and South Korea Trade War Threats (Video)

North and South Korea were trading threats of retaliation as tensions continued to soar on the peninsula. The South held its biggest land-based military exercises of the year Thursday, while its president visited an army base.

The drills, at training grounds in mountainous Pocheon just 20 miles from the heavily fortified border with the north, signalled South Korea’s determination to demonstrate its military strength.
President Lee Myung-bak has vowed a strong response to any new attacks by North Korea and the exercises are likely to reignite tensions in the region.
He said: ‘I had thought that we could safeguard peace if we had patience, but that wasn’t the case.
‘Now we should have a strong response, so that we can safeguard peace, deter aggression and prevent a war.’
Tanks raced down mountain roads firing artillery rounds as hills erupted with smoke.
Rockets were also fired by helicopters at makeshift targets and South Korean pilots also dropped bombs from F-15 fighters.

Video: Police e-fit could unravel spy death mystery

Police investigating the death of MI6 codebreaker Gareth Williams have released an e-fit of a couple they wish to trace

A British spy who was found dead in his London flat visited bondage websites and a drag club and had $23,000 worth of unworn designer womenswear in his wardrobe, detectives said Wednesday.
The Guardian newspaper reported that police believe the mystery surrounding Gareth Williams’ death will be solved through insights into his private life.
Williams, a 30-year-old official at the code-breaking agency GCHQ, was found inside a red North Face sports bag at his central London apartment on Aug. 23. Williams was working on attachment to the MI6 spy agency, but security officials believe it is unlikely that his killing was connected with his work. Toxicology tests showed there were no traces of drugs or poisons that may have led to his death.

Offering new details, police said they hoped to determine conclusively whether Williams’ death was linked to his personal life and to trace two people seen at the communal door of Williams’ apartment block in June or July.
The man and woman, described as Mediterranean in appearance in their 20s and dressed casually, were buzzed through the communal entrance at the flats in Alderney Street by another resident in late June or July, The Guardian said. They said they had been given a key and were on their way to the apartment that Williams lived in.

Obama Arrives in Hawaii for Vacation: Raw Video

President Barack Obama has arrived in his home state for a 10-day family vacation. He is joining his wife, Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha, and dog Bo, who have been vacationing at the family’s rented oceanfront home since last weekend.

A politically rejuvenated President Barack Obama arrived here late Wednesday for an 11-day family vacation in his home state.
Air Force One touched down shortly before midnight local time. The president headed to the rented oceanfront home in Kailua Bay where his wife, Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha, and dog Bo have been vacationing since Saturday.
The president had planned to arrive Saturday, too, but pushed back his departure to stay in Washington while lawmakers wrapped up a frenzied and productive lame-duck session.
He begins his vacation on a high note, having secured victories on a nuclear arms treaty with Russia and the repeal of the military’s ban on gay service members. He also struck a deal with Republican lawmakers to allow tax cuts for all income earners to continue, a compromise that angered some liberals but won Obama rare support from the GOP.
At a Washington news conference Wednesday, Obama said the accomplishments of a postelection session of Congress demonstrate “we are not doomed to endless gridlock.” He described the six-week lame duck session as “a season of progress for the American people.”
The waning weeks of 2010 provided the president a much-needed boost following a volatile year and a self-proclaimed “shellacking” in the November midterm elections. Awaiting Obama come January is an economy still struggling to achieve steady growth, a Congress more heavily laden with Republicans and a host of GOP challengers poised to run for his job in 2012.

Video: Lindsay Lohan Accuser Fired From Rehab Clinic

A day that began with authorities confirming Lindsay Lohan was being investigated for battery on a female staffer at a rehab facility where Lohan is getting treatment, ended with the worker getting fired after giving an interview about it.

Lindsay is squarely disputing the story chemical dependency technician Dawn Holland told TMZ … that Lindsay attacked her and caused her to sprain her arm so severely she’s on workers’ comp. Lindsay says, for starters, she wasn’t even with her two roommates hours before the incident. Lindsay says she was out getting her hair done.

Lindsay is telling her friends and family, when she returned to the house, Holland grabbed her abruptly and pushed her so hard, Lindsay began to cry.

Lindsay says that’s when she went inside the house and called 911.

As for refusing to take a breathalyzer, Lindsay says she actually asked Holland to give her a test but Holland refused.

Mailman, Andrew W.K. Sing 'Silent Night' In Impromptu Duet (VIDEO)

Andrew W.K.'s hot new internet video features an unexpected guest: Rodney the Mailman.

The singer-songwriter was in the Chicago offices of The Onion A.V. Club, recording a number of versions of "Silent Night" for their terrific "Holiday Undercover" series. At the end of the recording, the office mailman Rodney is coming through. He's sung on a couple of tracks in the Onion studio before, so the staff asks W.K. if he'd mind doing a duet with Rodney.

The result is nothing short of pure Christmas magic.

Rain, Snow Wallop Southern California (Video)

Authorities and residents were bracing for flooding, thunderstorms, hail, tidal surges and even small tornadoes Wednesday as the worst of a seven-day series of storms was expected to sweep into Southern California.

Wednesday’s storm was projected to be the most intense of the week, the result of a powerful, cold storm from the Gulf of Alaska colliding with a river of subtropical moisture from the western Pacific Ocean.

“When you get the very cold air mixing in with the very warm air, it can be quite volatile,” said Bill Patzert, a climatologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca?ada Flintridge. Forecasters said the system could produce lightning and possibly waterspouts offshore and small tornadoes on land.

HuffPost TV: Arianna 'Tawks' Education With Fran Drescher (VIDEO)

Arianna sat down to "tawk" with Fran Drescher on Tuesday. The former "Nanny" star recently launched her eponymous (and phonetic) "Fran Drescher Tawk Show."

Drescher's first question was about Arianna's strong positions and the reactions she gets.

"Especially women, they love it when you speak your mind," explained Arianna. "All of us as women have grown up with this desire to be constantly approved, and our fear is about expressing ourselves. When one of us does it, it's really validation for the rest of us. I feel that you can do it with grace and you can do it in a way that just makes it clear 'this is my truth, this is what I believe.' It can be about everything. You can have strong opinions, as I do, about politics and also about sleep. I'm a big believer in sleep!"

That kicked off the wide-ranging conversation. Along with politics and media, Arianna tackled education and had high praise for Michelle Rhee. "She's acting like a mom worrying about her own children," said Arianna while recognizing Rhee for bringing a sense of urgency to education.

FedEx Braces for Busiest Day (Video)

If veteran FedEx driver Joe Solimando could get through Monday, the next year will be cake.

Solimando, 53, prepared for FedEx’s busiest day of the year with military precision, mindful that every second counts.

“Timing is the most important part of this job,” he said as he readied a tactical assault on his route, 43rd St. between Fifth and Sixth Aves., where shops were stocking up for the holiday rush.

“You gotta know all the tricks. If you save 10 seconds, it could turn into five minutes,” he said.

And five minutes, when you are trying to beat a 10:30 a.m. deadline for priority deliveries, can be a lifesaver.

FedEx said it would deliver 16 million packages yesterday – its highest-ever volume for a single day and up 13% from last year’s busiest day.

“I just take it like a regular day. You can’t panic,” said Solimando, who’s been doing this for 16 years.

His day began at 3:30 a.m. in Flushing, Queens, where he lives with his wife, Sharon, two teenage sons, a Shih-tzu named Bunny and Chubby the cat.

He bought a coffee and a Daily News on the way to the F train, heading for FedEx’s midtown sorting center at 11th Ave. and W. 49th St.

Video: Monster Storm Has Midwest Reeling

A powerful winter storm continues to dump heavy snow across the upper Midwest, closing major highways in several states and canceling more than 1,600 flights in Chicago. The storm system dropped nearly 2 feet of snow in parts of Minnesota.

A ferocious winter storm tore through the Midwest over the weekend, delaying flights, closing highways and, on Sunday, triggering the collapse of the Minneapolis Metrodome’s inflatable roof.

Wicked weather swept through the high plains Saturday, closing interstates in Iowa and South Dakota, stranding travelers in airports and pummeling some cities so hard that officials pulled in their snowplows, declaring the fight futile.

In Minnesota, no stranger to brutal storms, the blizzard unleashed as much as 22 inches of snow, the deepest accumulation since a 1991 Halloween storm dumped 28″ on the Twin Cities. But 17″ of snow and gusting winds were too much for the 28-year-old Metrodome.

“It’s not like we’re not used to inclement weather,” said Bill Lester, executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission. “But this one was the mother of all storms. It really knocked us.”

The 20 year old singer just debuted her very first ad for CoverGirl cosmetics. Tay is set to be the face of CoverGirl NatureLuxe, which is a new silk foundation and gloss balm that’s supposed to be very light and fresh. Even Taylor is revealing that it feels great on her skin.

Box Office Tally: December 10-12 (Video)

British director Michael Apted on Friday brings out his new “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the third installment in the film series based on the children’s stories by C.S. Lewis.

The movie, which appears in 3D and cost around $140 million to make, arrives in theatres as part of the key holiday film season and Apted, 69, sat down with Reuters to discuss it.

Q: You made significant changes to the original C.S. Lewis story. How did you choose them and was it a difficult process?

A: “When I read it (the book) I was alarmed. I liked very much the story and the tone of it and the color of it and the imagination of it. (But) it was pretty clear to me that there was no drive to it whatsoever.

“It felt very episodic. That’s catastrophic in a movie. You’ve got to have a reason in a movie to go from A to B to C especially in a commercial movie. So that was a big problem.

MasterCard SecureCode service impacted in attacks over WikiLeaks (Video)

The attacks against MasterCard by WikiLeaks supporters that knocked the credit card company’s Web site offline today may have caused more problems than previously thought.

MasterCard itself has so far said publicly only that its corporate Web site experienced availability issues as a result of a sustained distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against the site. In a statement this afternoon, the company said that it was making progress addressing the issue and that no customer transactions had been affected.

It now appears that the company’s Securecode service for secure online transactions was also affected. It’s not clear, however, whether the SecureCode problems were caused by Anonymous, the group that knocked MasterCard’s corporate site offline after the attacks began about 4 a.m. ET.

In multiple bulletins to transaction processing companies, the company said that MasterCard and Maestro transactions could not be processed via SecureCode because of a service disruption to the MasterCard Directory Server.

Flock and Rockmelt Browsers (Video Reviews)

RockMelt, which is available on an invitation-only basis for now, is built on the same foundation as Google Inc.’s 2-year-old Chrome browser. For general browsing purposes, you can expect Chrome’s pros (speed, stability) and cons (some sites don’t work, including the one for paying my cable bill).

Once you install RockMelt, you set it up by giving it permission to integrate your Facebook account. You don’t need to create a new account the way you do with Flock, a competing “social browser” that’s been around for five years. You can then choose to add Twitter and Gmail accounts. RockMelt stores information in the “cloud,” so your settings will automatically follow you to other computers.

On the right of the main browser window is what RockMelt calls the App Edge, where buttons offer access to social-networking sites and other websites. On the far left side is the Friend Edge, a column of buttons representing Facebook friends. Above the Friend Edge is your Facebook profile picture — click to send a Facebook status update or tweet.

Also known as the Brazilian set of Breaking Dawn.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have been spotted lip-locking yet again. This time the twosome was on the beach, surrounded by a ton of crewmembers, where they did the same kissing sesh over and over again. They looked to be on a towel, with Rob wearing a tank and jeans and Kristen in a swimsuit bottom and a normal blouse.

We thought these two would’ve gotten this scene in one take, especially since they’ve had time to practice in their real life relationship. Either way though, fans are loving it. It’s also odd to get a glimpse of just how many people are on-site when these scenes are shot — maybe not so romantic after all…

The city of Morenci gathered Sunday night and lit up the town with candles, flashlights and Christmas lights, hoping to illuminate the way home for Andrew, Alexander and Taylor Skelton.

“We’ve been visited by darkness here and we don’t understand it,” said Donna Galloway, pastor of the Morenci United Methodist Church, where the boys and their family are members. “But as we light these lights tonight, be assured that the boys see the light.”

Missing since Thanksgiving, the boys had been with their father, John Skelton, who has since been charged with parental kidnapping and is being held in the Lucas (Ohio) County Jail.

Several hundred town residents converged on Wakefield Park in the small southern Michigan town to share their fading hopes and grief over the fate of the boys.

“I still had hope on Thursday,” said Jim Walker, 57, of Wauseon, Ohio, who helped search for the boys in woods and fields three days last week. “Now I’m not so sure.”

House Votes on Middle Class Tax Cuts: Raw Video

The White House and congressional Republicans have begun working behind the scenes toward a broad deal that would prevent taxes from going up for virtually every U.S. family and authorize billions of dollars in fresh spending to bolster the economy.
Negotiations have accelerated in recent days as Congress has confronted deadlines for extending a series of tax cuts that expire at the end of the month, renewing emergency jobless benefits and keeping the government funded into next year.

The talks mark the dawn of a new era on Capitol Hill, with resurgent Republicans holding far more leverage and commanding a more prominent role in crafting legislation. The private discussions, which parallel a more public set of talks, have left many Democrats grousing that President Obama is being too quick to accommodate his adversaries, who are still a month away from taking control of the House and expanding their presence in the Senate.

Republicans are demanding that Democrats extend Bush-era tax cuts at all income levels at least temporarily, not just those that primarily benefit the middle class. They are also pressing Democrats to approve a measure to keep the government funded through September, a move aimed at avoiding a fight with the White House over spending that could provoke a government shutdown.
