For years now, the most-coveted TV performance spot of the year — halftime at the Super Bowl — has been filled by a parade of classic rockers: Sir Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the Who.
The Dallas Morning News reported Friday the Black Eyed Peas will headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February. The National Football League would not confirm the news, but if it’s true, it would be the first time since the dreaded Incident Involving a Female Member of the Jackson Family That Must Not Be Named that a contemporary pop/hip-hop performer known for outlandish costumes has been invited to play the halftime show.
Since 2004, the NFL championship game has opted for a steady stream of veteran performers — Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Tom Petty, Prince — whose most likely wardrobe malfunction would be if something went wrong with their Velcro shoes.
The Peas have been one of the hottest bands on the planet in the past couple of years, churning out such hits as “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.”
