
Diego Maradona
Diego Armando Maradona is born in the Policlinico Evita de Lanus, in Buenos Aires Province. He was the fifth of eight children – the first male – of Diego Maradona (‘Don Diego’) and Dalma Salvadora Franco (‘Do?a Tota’). He grew up in the impoverished neighbourhood Villa Fiorito, also in the Buenos Aires conurbation.
28/09/1971: The first appearance of his name in the media. It was Clarin, due to the brilliant performances of his youth team ‘Los Cebollitas’ who published an article which said “There was a kid with the attitude and talent of a star”, although they mispelled his name “Caradona”.
14/10/2009: Heart-stopping wins over Peru and Uruguay lead Argentina into the World Cup, after several setbacks along the way in qualification. In an emotional press conference afterwards Maradona launches a foul-mouthed outburst against critical members of the press, leading to a two month ban from football from FIFA.
03/07/2010: After four straight wins Argentina are thrashed 4-0 by Germany in the last eight of the World Cup, and say goodbye to South Africa. It would be Maradona’s last appearance on the ‘Albiceleste’ bench.
27/10/2010: The Argentine FA choose not to renew Diego’s contract, after the coach refused to drop unwanted individuals from his backroom staff.
