Steven Gerrard
The Anfield captain has previously snubbed a move to Chelsea and was targeted by Real Madrid after the World Cup, but the 30-year-old stayed on Merseyside despite Liverpool’s fall from grace.
Stars such as Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina have been tipped for transfers if the slump continues, but Hodgson is confident he will have no problems holding on to the likes of local boys Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
‘Carragher is an excellent player and people like him and Steven Gerrard epitomise Liverpool Football Club,’ said Hodgson.
‘These days there is so much talk about do players want to stay or want to go, and with those two there’s never any question. They are Liverpool through and through.
‘It’s very important we have people like that at this club and Carragher epitomises it with his fighting spirit.
‘He has played left-back, right back and centre half for me this season and he doesn’t moan about it.
‘He gets on with job and I have no fears ever about playing him at full back or centre back because he plays equally as well in both positions.’
The boss also defended Joe Cole after a laclustre start to the former Chelsea midfielder’s Anfield career.
The England international snubbed offers from the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United to join Liverpool as a free agent after the World Cup, but he has struggled to impress.
